"A sage and his friend were walking by a pool. The water was cool and green and deep, and in its shade the goldfish shone like fragments of the sun. The sage watched them for a long time. At last he smiled and said, 'They are happy.'
'You are not a goldfish,' said his friend, 'so how do you know they are happy?'
The sage said, 'You are not I. So how do you know that I do not know they are happy?'"

-- "Happy Goldfish," Animalia

Breath, life, and soul were once known as "anima" in Latin. Our word "animal" comes from this. There are always people who live in harmony with Animalia, kingdom of the animals. Many have been saints and sages that live on in legend still.

When they began to appear, many thought it a blessing and a gift. Seemingly ordinary humans began to develop powers associated with natural forces; healers, growers, those who could speak with the animals and those who could bring rain in the midst of a drought. They were named Animalia after the animal kingdom that many of them were so close to. And for a time, they lived in peace, and humanity thrived, becoming an equalized utopia of science and nature.

But with every life, there must at some point, come death.

Slowly, cautiously, signs started appearing all over the world. Some of the Animalia grew tired of giving and receiving nothing in return. They began to use their powers to take what they thought was owed to them. Healers started to use their powers to hurt instead of help. Those who grew things instead turned their wrath and took life away from others. Animal speakers told the fierce hunters of the forest and sea to tear apart the normal humans, and anyone with elemental control wreaked havoc in any way they could.

The humans looked upon all Animalia and deemed them as work of the devil, sent here to destroy them. They, in turn, were vengeful and even a little afraid of these people they knew nothing about. They fought back with machines and science, coming to despise the natural and embrace a new age of technology.

And... In the end... They were divided.

The remaining good Animalia fled to safe-havens of their own make in the mountains, forests, rivers, and sky. They feared the humans and their destructive ways, as it was getting harder and harder to maintain what little good, green earth there was left. They also hated those who used their powers to destroy what they had worked so hard to create. The hated how they dared to claim themselves Animalia. Many of them seek their
Holy Land, a sanctuary that lied at the foot of a set of haunted mountains in a forest that didn't seem to exist.

The bad Animalia seek the
Holy Land as well, but to take it for themselves and become powerful enough to stop the fighting and claim absolute power. They want nothing but revenge on the humans that treated them as demons, and they view the good Animalia as weak for not taking advantage of the humans. They secretly fear that the good Animalia will reach the Holy Land first and gain enough power to push them back.

The humans now live in their own synthetic world, wanting nothing but to exterminate any and all Animalia from the face of the planet. So many years wrapped up in their own illusions and devices, some of them have forgotten their own war, and some believe that they succeeded in taking out the Animalia years ago. Bigger cities live in false security, but outposts all over are slowly expanding, choking the planet of it's life in their need to expand and their wish to take over.

And so it stands. Three threads, all tied to the same spool.
Will life or death prevail?

BREAKDOWN
[I'm sorry, did the goldfish story confuse you?]

I'm back. :D

If you're having trouble wrapping your head around all this, think of it sort of like a tree-hugging version of X-men. You've got your good mutants, your bad mutants, and your humans. It's just that all your mutants are eco-friendly (or have the capacity to be, at least.) Here's some good stuff to remember when you play the game:

HERE'S THE BIG ONE: If you want to join, leave a reply saying that you'll be joining (for the sake of keeping this baby on the front page so people will see it), and then PM me your template. If you think your template will be too big to PM, you're welcome to send it to me in sections. (like the first half in
one PM, and then the monster bio in the second half. Don't worry about spamming my inbox--This is the good kind of spam. :3). If you need to work on it over time or can't finish it all in one sitting, you can either PM it to me as you go or work on it in a Notepad (or Word) program on your computer or something until you've got it done. When I accept it, you can post it to the thread (preferably as an edit to the post where you said you wanted to play) or you could just keep it confidential and surprise people if you want. If you only post your template to the thread, you will be laughed at unless you've got a damn good reason to be doing so.
• Seriously. I can say no to people. I felt bad about it last time, but now I'm gonna seriously crack down. I want to see literacy, good concepts, and a healthy amount of content. You don't have to go writing your own novel, just enough to give me a fairly good idea of what's up with your character.
• The usual rules apply. God-modding, power-playing, spotlight-hogging, character-ignoring, and most other like terms with hyphens shouldn't happen here. You're all good, responsible players here, so play nice!
• Your characters, regardless of side, power, occupation, health, age, gender, ect, will probably start out in or near the forest, just for the sake of plot. The forest contains all manner of things your character may need, so feel free to use your imagination.
• The human's technology level is futuristic, but not too futuristic. Flying cars are a no. Hoverbikes are a yes. Laser guns are a no unless you've got government clearance. Small hologram projectors are good to go.
• This is a largely character-driven plot. You want romance? I'm good with romance (just keep it safe for the kiddies). You want to introduce an evil villain to further the plot? Go for it. You want to switch sides? Be my guest, just prepare for the consequences.
• If you've got any questions, concerns, complaints, or inquiries, either PM me or ask it right on the thread. I don't bite, I swear. ~

TEMPLATE
[The stuff in italics is just me explaining. Feel free to delete it.]

Name: (self-explanatory)
Gender: (also self-explanatory)
Age: (preferably 10 and older)
Side: (This is either the good Animalia, the bad Animalia, or the humans. Mind you, this may change over time--you could decide that being a good guy sucks and you want to be evil, or that you should atone for your destructive ways and lend a helping hand, or you could even be a human that becomes an Animalia by plot-twist--this is just the side you'll start out on.)
Positive Power: (If you want to be a human, just ignore this. All Animalia have a nature-based power that can either be used for good, or for evil. Use your imagination in creating your power. I'm allowing you to stretch your powers as far as your creative range--within reason, of course--will allow, but you only get one... So choose wisely.)
Negative Power: (This is what could happen when you take your positive power and use it for baaad. So, for example, if you have control over water, you could, in theory, make a tsunami or flood stuff.)
Appearance: (you know how this works)
Items: (this would be a weapon or items that are important to your character, if you've got any. Humans would probably have a few more than others, since they're very technologically savvy.)
Personality: (keep your side in mind when writing this. If you're an Animalia, you're probably eco-friendly and rather in-tune with nature (yeah, even the bad ones). Humans are probably more logical. These are only suggestions, however, so feel free to go wild.)
Bio: (you don't have to make it a novel, but make it at least two good, solid paragraphs. More is always loved.)
Other: (Does your character speak two dead languages? Does he or she have an allergic reaction to milk? An insane fear of heights? Is colorblind in their right eye? Random stuff like that should go here.)

Now... I'm going to sleep for six hours. I'll be back soon, loves, so send me those character templates! :D

The Duet

Name: Ollina Tauron
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Side: Good
Positive Power: Quite simply, Ollina can speak and communicate well with animals.
Negative Power: With her abilities, it would be all-too easy for her to persuade packs and herds of wild animals to turn savage on other humans.
Appearance: (I'm assuming that modern clothes are alright...) Ollina has shoulder-lenght auburn hair that is tied back in a braid. She is short, standing at 5'0" and weighs about 115 lbs. Her eyes are a pale green and her skin tone is that of an average caucasian. She wears a black hoody with green seems and black cargo shorts. Her shoes are standard, bulky, blue tennis shoes with yellow laces. My IMVU avatar:
Snap_4526961534525d19085e8e.jpg

Snap_19471159014525d0f15aa7f.jpg

Items: With her animal friends at her side, Ollina hasn't really any use for a weapon. From time to time she'll pick up a crowbar or something, but she doesn't cary a weapon. However, her most prized and essentially only possession is a strange sort of golden clock or compass. The device has small hands and gears that point to various symbols. Ollina can't remember where it came from, but she learned how to read the symbols years ago. The device can tell the user (if they're listening) the feelings of the planet around them. Ollina keeps this device safe and hidden and only uses it in times of desperation.
Personality: Ollina is kind, compassionate, adventurous, and at times, a bit childish. However, this does not mean that she is not intelligent. She simply does what she believes is right. She is eager to make friends, but at the same time, she is not afraid to make enemies
Bio: Ollina grew up without parents, but with her animal companions at her side, life was far from hard. At a young age, Ollina knew that she was not normal. Though some adults tried to take her in when she wandered the city, she longed to roam and be free. Naturally, this inspired a great sense of independence in her.
When she started to grow into adolescence, Ollina decided that she preferred the forest over the city. She made many great friends there and was happy for a little while. However, as she matured, she realized the wrongs of the world and set out to the city, once again to try and stop those wrongs.
Other: Ollina's best friend is a hawk named Cillian.

This sounds great, I'd like to take part too. I'll try to PM you my sign up later once I finish my English Literature essay and have had dinner.

One thing I'm concerned about, though, is ending up choosing the same 'abilities' or having a past/ appearance too similar to someone else. (If possible, I'd like to use the power to transform into animals, or, if any animal is too much, just a select few, or if that's still too much, just one. Or something else... I'm not sure how strong these abilities should be)

Little Brothers

Name: Alexander Kelvein
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Side: In the beginning, neutral, eventually good.
Positive Power: Unnatural strength and speed, and can communicate and, sometimes, use plants and trees.
Negative Power: Besides his ability to kill most men with bare hands, he could easily trace anything, anywhere, as long as there is any form of vegetation, ability he could use to follow and kill the good guys.
Appearance: 6’4 feet tall, and quite athletic. His blond hair goes down to the middle of his back. Deep blue eyes and fairly beautiful face. Powerful arms and legs, to make it short, he could be a Viking giant from the Norse tales. He wears high leather boots with black jeans tucked into them, and has a necklace with a bear tooth.
Items: His only weapons are hunting dagger and a crossbow he stole during his exile in the forests.
Personality: At first sight he may seem like a savage brute, but his personality is a complete opposite of his looks. Does not like fighting, unless it is for a good cause, and prefers reading and studying the forests and its inhabitants, and also likes adventuring himself into the unknown. He has a good sense of humor, and a strong sense of justice and honor.
Bio: All his family has lived in Norway for centuries, but at the age of 19 he was sent abroad to study at an expensive university. Since he had lived near forests and lakes, the life of the city was very hard on him, and his rather unusual appearance gave him trouble blending into society. In the end, he couldn’t stand it and fled to the forests of the city. He is now regarded by the citizen as a crazy hermit, but no one dares go look for him.
He became aware of his ability to communicate with plants and trees at the age of 4, one day he got lost in the forest, his cries where answered by the voice of nature, and was guided to safety. Since then he has kept it a secret, and has worked hard to develop this ability. Recently, he has learned to talk the trees into helping him in a more physical way, getting them to move.

Dragon's Eye

Name: Aeolus
Gender: Male
Age: 36

Side: Many would think of his views as evil, but they simply do not understand him. Aeolus considers himself a keeper of natures balance.

Positive Power: Aeolus possesses power over the winds, surging lightning, and temperature in the environment. With this, he keeps, as he says, 'the balance of nature'.

Negative Power: If used for wrong doing, Aeolus' powers could cause catastrophic results. Towns could freeze over, huge typhoons could crash into shores and ports, and every method of communication could be taken down with his blasts of high-voltage lightning.

Appearance:
aeulouspo4.jpg

Items: Nothing. He owns no earthly possessions. He considers them far too.. human.

Personality: Aeolus considers the world broken. His views are, and always have been, neutral to the situation at hand. If there is far too great an evil arising, Aeolus will deal with it. However, if there is far too great a force for good arising, this must also be dealt with by Aeolus.

This leaks deep into his personality. He is hollow. He is emotionless. He is a warrior of no God. He is nature's peacekeeper.

Bio: The rain was battering against the window panes of the First Cottage, Trabroun, just up the road from the small country village of Lauder. No doubt the electricity would go out again - it always did in the bad weather, and often for days at a time. Living so far out in the countryside came with risks like such.

Screams of agony echoed throughout the dark cottage, reaching no-ones ears bar those of Christopher Mallen. The shrill cry was announcing itself from his wife, Emma. She was in labour.

Another scream leaped past her lips as the weather outside grew even that much more demeaning upon the power supply. Thunder roared through the barren Scottish hills as lightning reared it's burning face against the land.

Christopher Mallen was on the phone to a nurse at the Borders General Hospital, which was 20 miles away. She was a midwife at the hospital, guiding Mallen through the procedures to aid his wife in delivering their child in the safest way possible for both Mother and offspring.

Another roar belted outside, accompanied by an overly loud surge of lightning. There was a bang, as a fissure of sparks appeared past the Mallen bedroom window. The midwife stopped speaking, and it took Christopher some time to realise why. The phoneline has been destroyed by the lightning.

The mother-to-be shrieked her most heart-tearing scream that night, grabbing so tight upon Christopher's shirt he thought he may choke. At that moment, the baby crowned, and the couple worked together, without the aid of anyone else, in bringing their young boy into the world.

-----

Some hours later, Emma Mallen woke up in a clean. crisp bed. The wind was still howling outside, and the rain still pouring, but the worst of the storm has passed.

She reached over and kissed her sleeping husband gently on the cheek before arousing herself from her bed and walking over to the bottom of the bedroom. She peered over the cot sitting there and smiled, looking down at her newborn child.

"You're definitely another Christopher", she whispered gently, stroking the child's cheek.

Emma turned around as she heard her husband yawn and stretch, like he always did, and she couldn't help but smile even more. They had survived the night. That.. aweful, terrifying night.

"Hunny, you're awake? You should be getting some rest" grumbled Christopher, still half asleep, "Come 'ere, lassie!"

Emma walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, "I think we should name him Chris, after you".

"Yeah?" said the proud father, a toothier-than-usual smile opening across his face, "Are you sure?"

"Yes", the mother sighed happilly, "Yes, he's certainly a Chris."

----

At the breakfast table, Emma read something that slightly unnerved her. "Sweety, come look at this. The newspaper says that there wis nae issue for a storm last night. Infact, the weather everywhere is determined as sunny an' warm, without a cloud in the sky."

"Ah, they always get it wrong, and ye know wit the weather's always like up 'ere, always changin'", Christopher replied.

(I have more bio to add, but this'll do for now, as I'm making it up on the spot, and my fingers hurt. Dx)

"A Choir"

Name: Isixs

Gender: Female

Age: 20

Side: Good Animalia

Positive Power: Animal transformation; but her favorite forms are cats and birds. She can turn into any animal that she can see. It can come in handy when she needs to help her critter friends, because it enables her to gain insight into their mind.

Negative Power: If she's possessed or goes to the bad side.... forget it, you don't even want to think of the disasters that would follow.

Appearance: http://www.advancedanime.com/displayimage.php?pid=150359
Everything about her speaks of a feline grace. The large, crystal clear, sapphire blue eyes change color depending on light levels; from onyx black to a deep, dark blood red. Surrounding her eyes are thick, luxuriant ebony lashes. Isixs' long, silky golden tresses frame her pale face in a way that is difficult to match. (I know that her hair is a bluish color in the pic, but I think she should be a blond.) Honey colored ears are perched like a crown on her head. She wears a flowing robe-like dress of snow white and royal blue silk that hangs off her shoulders. Isixs wears bronze armor on her chest and around her neck, almost like a collar. Her only jewelry is a medallion with her family crest and a locket on a silver chain. No one has ever seen the photo that is the secret treasure of her most cherished pendant. The necklace seems to have special powers; but only a few of them are known.

Items: Sheesh, what kind of weapons would a cat girl wield? Probably kunai, spells and her natural form. And these are exactly what Isixs' weapons are.

Personality: Interesting question. Isixs is a real romantic, always dreaming about the life and the love she once had. But she hides it behind her catlike aloofness and disinterest. No matter which side she chooses to show, she is a real firecracker when it comes to a battle; though she'd much rather avoid them, because she doesn't want to get her, "paws," dirty. But what she doesn't show is how hurt she is; it's almost like someone has carved a giant hole in her heart.

Bio: At one time, nothing could have been better for the girl that had been called Isis. She'd had a bit of a rough start in life, but soon over came it with her bright, cheery attitude. Working with animals had always been her greatest passion; it came as almost no surprise when she discovered her gift of transformation. She thought that she would never fall in love with anyone; after all, animals where her life, and because she was what some people would call a "freak," and what others would say as being "gifted." But she still didn't believe that any man could win her affections.

That was what she believed, until the day that she turned sixteen. She was working on her job, the "Animal Whisperer," as people called her, when she ran into him. Her firm beliefs of being a bachelorette quickly vanished as she looked into his deep, clear silvery-green eyes. He smiled gently, extending his hand and giving her a simple, "Hi, my name is Erick. What's your name, pretty kitty?"

She almost melted when she heard his rich, clean baritone. He was the love that she thought she would never have; the one that kept coming to her in half remembered dreams. Tall with dark, pitch black hair that had a slight reddish tint; lightly tanned skin; a great personality; a smile that could melt the snow on the chilliest winter's day. An honesty that caused an almost instant trust. And those eyes that where to die for.

She still doesn't know how he managed to stay single until the day that they met. All she could truly grasp at first was that they were soul mates. Unlike most humans, he didn't hate her when she told him about her special talent. All he said was, "There's nothing wrong with being different. It's only wrong if you think it's wrong. Besides, life would be totally dull without some diversity."

Isis and Erick spent two happy years together. Finally, they decided it was time to tell his parents about their relationship. Isis wasn't worried; after all, his folks had to be good people to have turned out such a great person. But deep down, she was a little afraid. What if they made them split up? She didn't think she could go on after she had known such great happiness. But she pushed those little doubts aside. To late for them now.

The meeting was going along pleasantly enough; until Isis made a fatal mistake, and told them of her abilities. A fight followed right after this, scaring Isis right out of her senses. His parents wanted the romance to be terminated that instant; while Erick stubbornly refused. After hours of this, Isis ran from the residence sobbing; ignoring Erick's pleas to come back.

Isis spent a sleepless night in the forest. Even the wolves and deer couldn't ease her crying. Finally, as the dawn was slowly fading into morning, she got up and brushed herself off. She knew what she had to do. She still loved her creature friends; but she knew that for her to find true peace she needed Erick too.

The next thing she knew she was in a jail cell, trying to understand why. She asked every officer that came near her, but they either ignored her or scoffed and continued on their way. Finally, one that seemed to have more compassion then the rest answered her pleas. "You're under arrest for the murder of Erick McClair," she said before continuing on her way.

Isis slumped down in the corner, stunned. Murder? She couldn't believe it! She couldn't believe that someone could kill such a kind young man. She was able to believe why they'd think she did it; every human always suspected those that weren't what they called "normal." She knew the sentence that was waiting for her. It was the same that waited for anyone convicted of being an Animila: execution.

For a while, death seemed like a good idea. She didn't want to live if Erick was dead. But soon she decided that she couldn't take the easy way out. She needed to find his murderer and bring them to justice. In order to do that though, she needed to escape from this dungeon. Waiting until the dead of night, she transformed into a humming bird to escape.

Unable to bear anyone calling her by her true name, she changed it to Isixs. She's searched two long years to find the killer, and she won't rest until she does. She can't rest because the memory of their final night together still haunts her dreams.

Theme Song: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Fo07hQ6JS2g "Let Me Let Go" by Faith Hill

Quote: I hate how I always have to pretend I'm happy, when really my heart is shattered into 1,000 pieces and there's no one to pick them up.

Sorries for the long wait. Do you know when we might be able to get this started?

*smacks self* Graaah. I totally forgot about this thread; I'm so easily distracted. Thank you very much for the bump~ Bad me, bad me...

So as far as I can tell, we'll have four characters (five, if I count myself) playing so far. Anyone else who wants to join after we start may do so--just remember to read the rules. Rules are a pain, but they're more or less what hold the universe together.

I promise that my next post will be totally in character, and the start of the RP. Huzzah. ~♥

It was night.

There was very little to see by except the moon, an occasional stray firefly, and the orange glow of her own candle mounted on a staff that she held. She sang softly into the night, mostly to warn others of her approach should they mistake her for an animal or the like in her coming and going. She was stepping a bit too close to civilization for her comfort, and while singing like that would certainly make her a target... She hardly wanted to be shot in the dark by mistake for a misinterpretation. Things like that were rare, but known to happen.

The song wasn't anything in particular. Just an old lullaby her mother had taught her as a child. She wasn't sure if she even had all the words right. It didn't really matter to her though. She was just here to get a job done, and then she'd be returning to the sanctuary where it was safe.

If anyone were to have seen her there that night, they would've seen a tall girl with lanky build wearing a dark green robe with the hood up. Strands of brown hair fell out of her hood here and there, and appeared almost black in the dim light. Her face had to it an orange glow, but that was only because of her lantern. Her eyes were grayish green, mostly pointed at the ground to find what she was looking for.

Soon her singing stopped and she halted her walking, planting her lantern-staff in the ground near a small stream. It trickled down among what looked like a loosely conceived garden, a number of herbs and other things planted there. She kneeled down and examined a withered leaf in her hand.

"You poor things..." she said quietly, continuing the rest of her sentence in thought, 'This stream's been polluted... Was this intentional? Would they go so far as to attack these medicines?' Many Animalia depended on plants like these to keep on living, because there was so much poison in the air, earth, and water. She took a deep breath and blew gently on the leaf; it glowed a faint blue in color, then unshrivelled and suddenly appeared brand new, as if it were in good soil with clean water. She went about in such a fashion, healing the plants with a touch or with the breath of life.

Soon her work was finished, and she sat down on a large mossy rock to rest. "It's a shame," she said softly to herself, "that I can't purify water..."

Then she wished she hadn't had said that aloud. She could quite suddenly hear that she wasn't the only one in that part of the forest.
