KH1 had much more darker atmosphere, IMO. I actually could melt into the plot while playing the first game, but the sequel was made too childish that I sometimes even couldn't watch the cutscenes without feeling humiliation.

You need to play with Ventus in the tutorial. Afterwards you have the option to choose the playing character. When you beat the game once, it let's you choose if you want to skip the tutorial. I'm playing currently Ventus (done) -> Aqua (currently) and then Terra.
