Nomura has always favored Riku so it's not that surprising; he's one of the most complex and fleshed out characters in the series who's been there since the beginning, all the other attempted redemption arcs so far in this series still don't really hold a candle compared to his. Calling it bias is a bit much since it implies his popularity and creator fondness is unearned.

If he is playable and heavily features in the Shibuya game, then I'm definitely going to buy that game, and probably break my promise of never preordering a KH game ever again.

Oracle Spockanort stated everything that I would have replied with concerning your response. There's not much for me to say without the risk of sounding repetitive. The post encapsulated all my thoughts.

The only difference is that, while I understand that you like Riku, I don't feel the same way. I'm tired of him, I'm tired of him being pushed, and he has become utterly dull to watch due to his growth having reached its finality. Yes, he had a good redemption arc...keyword, had. I respect his character for that. But that happened because Nomura allowed him the chance to in the first place in a series with an overall subpar/mediocre narrative full of nonsense. That doesn't change the fact that his time is done, his arc was completed ages ago, his development has stagnated, and it's about time the bias goggles came off and other characters get more screen time to shine instead of incessantly pushing a character that should be benched.

I rather take a Naminé game where they have her go on adventures and train as she obtains a Keyblade and discovers past mysteries from the Age of Fairytales. If they don't think she can sell by herself, drop in Roxas. And Roxas. I'll even take a Roxas game, since I don't believe 358/2 Days counts as one for him since it got hijacked by Xion, and he's much more dynamic and interesting personality-wise. I'll take a game with TAV and Kairi exploring Ventus' memories as it slowly comes to light via the Forerellers' presence in the plot. Literally anything would be better than shoehorning Riku in because Nomura refuses to let favoritism go. It's why we have Dollar Tree Noctis with Dollar Tree Stella and TWEWY thrown in.

This would have perfectly set the bar for Kairi to take the spotlight since she's the only one out of her trio that hasn't gotten to and Riku has since long peaked. They blew it.

The fact the next game is riku focused is the most disappointing thing imo.
he's been so boring since DDD for me.
we already got to play him a lot.
i wouldn't care if it was anyone else, but of course it had to be him.
very uninterested in the next game, just hope what comes after that will be worth it (probably not)

Exactly my feelings.

If I hadn't dropped the series already, this supposed upcoming game with Riku (along with MoM cause...wow), would have had me pack my bags and go.

No, there is no secret ending. Nomura has stated this in interviews.

@Zettaflare Riku came in third on that poll. I'm pretty sure Roxas or Axel beat him (since Japan loves Days and those characters). I want to say Roxas, but I'm not a hundred percent sure.

And Stella being a key needed to help save Sora, makes me wonder if the theory about Sora and Yozora switching bodies at the end of the Secret Episode is true. Like, maybe they'll need Riku and Kairi to sort out the parts that are Sora, and Stella to sort out the parts that are Yozora... probably not.

But now I wonder if the Secret Episode actually takes place after Melody of Memory. Did Stella learn she should save Sora from Kairi and Riku, and she then somehow contacted Yozora to help out with that? Spitballing here.

Pfffft....I knew I had a reason to curse the idea of Kairi stuff on a rhythm game, but to think that they've basically shafted Kairi to the point of SORA TAKING HER PLACE FOR...SOME UNGODLY REASON, It's so goddamn laughable. Honestly either delete Kairi from the game, or find other people who knows how to write characters, let alone Kairi. There's...REALLY no reason to trust Nomura and his writing staff to actually make Kairi relevant EVEN IF IT MEANT SAVING THEIR LIVES.

Ok..... look: I haven't played the game yet. Actually seeing the events in action could change how I feel, I fully acknowledge that. And despite all this, the game still at the very least going to be a good time. I've spent a good chunk of time on the demo already and if there's one thing this game actually surprised me with was the gameplay actually being pretty fun for me. Sucks there aren't many boss fights but that's not really a deal breaker...

...this.... is.... comical. Like... oh my god. The fact that Kairi not only gets her ass handed to her AGAIN, the only way she can defeated Xehanort is to turn into... Sora? Wh-h-haaa-hahahahahaha?!?!?! oh my god, what the actual living fuck is this bullshit? Dude... Nomura.... why? I'm seriously asking... why? Like, I know people are over this opinion being stated over and over again. I know a lot of fans are sick and tired of Kairi at point. Believe me guys, as a Kairi fan (not even sure I can call myself that at this point), I get it.... But like... dude, its RIGHT THERE. It's not THAT hard. A literal monkey with a stick up its ass could write something more compelling. The literal potential for her to be one of the best and strongest characters in the series and EVERY SINGLE TIME Noruma just throws her away. I don't understand. I don't get it. What is this guy's beef with this character? If you don't care about her, then why do any of this? Why market her as the main character? Why put her in the title screen of Re:mind and MoM? Why tease her at the end of DDD only for her to get killed? Why try and get on good graces with the fans by making her playable and teasing her involvement in the next saga, only to pull this literal sexist trash? Like dude, I've never called Noruma a sexist before, I just think he doesn't know how to write female characters properly, but Kairi... holy shit... LITERALLY turning into Sora and teaming with Riku AGAIN as the only way defeat Xehanort is the biggest red flag. I thought that was a joke when I read it. Holy shit man, how do you fuck up this badly?

And not only that, she gets benched AGAIN. Why can't she be apart of DDD2? It makes no sense at all. Like, I love Riku. I really do but I don't want another game with him and Mickey and possibly meeting Totally-Not-Riku. I'm so over it. Having a Riku/Kairi would've changed up the dynamic a bit for interesting character interaction and some SRK moments we haven't gotten since KINGDOM HEARTS 2 ...but NOPE. Can't have anything interesting happening in Kingdom Hearts. We have to make sure Riku and Totally-Not-Riku meet up, so Totally-Not-Riku can have a game in Totally-Not-Final-Fantasy-Versus-13. What'd you say? Other characters? BBS2? Roxas game? Kairi game? Union Cross Remake? Pft, fuck those guys. Fuck interesting character development and pairings. We need more games involving Xehanort who btw is fucking and irrelevant. Who needs those, am I right? .... god... DAMN IT

Why does Kingdom Hearts do this? Why is it constantly shooting itself in the foot? Why does Nomura insist on doing whatever he wants with no regard for what fans actually want. I'm not saying him as a writer can't write the story how he feels but this... dude... idk, I had some faith in the future of this story after KH3 and Re: mind (somewhat) but after this, Dark Road, all the theories surrounding Yozora, and now DDD2 confirmed to be just another Riku outing... I'm finding it really REALLY hard to care anymore. Like, I'm at a breaking point. This was the perfect game to set up Kairi for having the next overarching arc the same as Riku but he refuses to take the first step. Sora and Riku didn't need to be benched like she is right now. They just went on there journeys and learned as they go. There is no reason Kairi can't do the same and this is where I feel like either the ignorant part of Noruma or the sexist part of Noruma comes out bc there is no reason Kairi needs more training when she helped defeat ARMORED XEHANORT. Sora and Riku have faced less on there first journeys and didn't need training until DDD. So I'm starting to think Noruma just does not care at all. And if so, why even make this marketing surrounding Kairi and her backstory if you're not going to do ANYTHING with it or her. That's the real kicker, is that her backstory has nothing to with anything. It's really not all that relevant to finding to Sora as far as I can tell, SO WHAT IS THE POINT?!?!

Like, they have to know this is going to piss people off. Maybe not everyone, some are just numb to the pain and disappointment, but others like me that have some bit of hope for at least a good set up to Kairi's arc? There is no way they are not going to flip out over this. Again, Kairi TURNS INTO SORA as the only way to stop the bad guy. Like, Noruma, my bro, that is not a good look dude. Like, at all. I'm not a woman and even I'm pissed at this, I can only imagine female fans reaction to something like that. Like, that is beyond parody.

Oh yeah, and just throwing away any potential BBS2. Which fine... whatever. And Aqua training Kairi is logical, it's just not exciting since we're never going to ser that. Honestly, the only saving grace for any of this right is KH4 being packed with a lot of plot but given the way KH3 ended up, my hope is starting waver and I won't even be shocked anymore if Kairi gets killed or benched. That's what little faith I have now. My hope in this franchise's story is basically on life support. And I swear if most of the relevant story is saved for the very end, I'm going to lose my mind.

Like at point, I think Noruma needs to step away from this franchise. Or just spin-off a Yozora franchise like you want and just write that forever. Idk man but it's very clear why I liked Final Fantasy 7 Remake so much. Bc he was solely the director and that was it but KH refuses to have anything compelling or interesting happen to any of its characters right now besides Riku. Kingdom Hearts has so much potential story wise to be more then it is. The only thing I can do is hope SOMETHING changes. This makes VERY upset but, surprisingly, I'm not giving up on it yet. Idk if that makes me loyal or stupid or both but I see too much good in this franchise to completely abandon it. But at this point, something seriously needs to change.

KH can't go on making stupid decisions like this forever. Because even diehard have a breaking point. But since this is mostly Kairi goofs and not stupid plot stuff, I think most fans are going stomach through this. Bc Kairi goofs are, sadly, to be expected But Kairi fans? Dude... idk guys. Can't say its over just yet, she is getting training with Aqua so while the fuck knows at this point but I refuse to get hype for her doing anything ever again until the writers decide to do ANYTHING WITH HER.

Oh, let's just come off it. Even with bad writing, we all know we're going to buy the game anyway, even on sale, because we liked the series as kids. The Disney nostalgia keeps us hooked, those who are into jRPGs stay for the Final Fantasy elements, and the fact that we wasted our time in the game through the years sealed the deal. We make threats to walk away but then something inside us snaps and we turn tail and run right to the door with open arms. You know it, I know it, we're all going to buy it, even if that's a bitter pill to swallow. There's no denying that. I'm gonna end up buying this game too, even on sale.

That said, the writing for Kairi is still terrible. Nearly 20 years and Kairi is still on the backburner. You'd think in all that time the game's style would diversify and not just in terms of niche genre. Maybe it's because there's very little feminine influence in the studio? The only female names I can remember off the top of my head that was involved in KH are: Utada, Shimomura, and Kanemaki. The first two are strictly on music and the last one...well she's the reason Xion is in the game but that's about it.

Actually...not as a diss against Nomura but has he even had a significant relationship to any woman before, besides his mother? Maybe even just a female friend if nothing romantic?

Edit: + story elements. If it weren’t for the fact this game had story elements I’d have ignored it because I suck at rhythm games.

Sora, Roxas, and Axel, in that order, all pretty close to the point where it could have been anyone's game with those three. Riku, on the other hand, got fourth place. I forgot the actual numbers to analyze if the gap was significant but Nomura didn't like the turn out enough to comment on it regardless .
