I know there are probably a lot of name threads already, but I haven't found any recent ones and don't want to ping people by bumping up old threads. Also, many old name threads don't cover characters from KHDR, so I'm putting those here, too. Note that I'm taking lots of information from fans, not official sources.
Destiny Trio - SRK
Sora - meaning “sky” in Japanese or “empty,” as “Vanitas” and “Sora” are written the same way in kanji. The sky also refers to a line in Kairi’s letter, “There are many worlds but they share the same sky - one sky, one destiny.” This is a metaphor for Sora, whose heart is connected to people from every world. His name is also opposite to the names of Yozora and Noctis Caelum (the latter from Final Fantasy XV and the cancelled Final Fantasy Versus XIII) which both mean “Night Sky” in Japanese and Latin respectively.
Riku - meaning “land” or “shore” in Japanese.
Kairi - “kai” means “ocean” and “ri” means “village,” in Japanese, so her name means “ocean village”. “Kairi” as a whole word translates to “nautical mile” in Japanese. It can also mean “separation” which is the opposite to Sora being “the sky that connects all worlds,” showing that she is his counterpart and love interest.
(Fun fact: In Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind DLC, when Sora is talking to Naminé, he refers to the Final World as “the world of ocean and sky.” Could this have something to do with Kairi and Sora? Also, the secret ending of Re:Mind starts off in the Final World, except it’s nighttime there instead. Yozora’s name means “night sky.”)
Sea-Salt Trio - RAX
Roxas - an anagram of “Sora” with an “x” in it (the Recusant’s Sigil). His name is also similar to “Rojas,” which could translate to “light,” “red” or “the red dawn of day.” At the start of 358/2 Days, Axel asks Roxas if he knows why the sun sets red, and this is a memorable moment in the two’s friendship.
Xion - an anagram of “no. i” with an “x” in it. “No. i” not only symbolises that she was a replica, a project with a number assigned to her, “No. i” also refers to the imaginary number, “i”, which is the square root of -1. Also, when you turn the “i” into Roman Numerals, it becomes the number one. So “No. i” could also mean “no one,” referring to how Xion was not supposed to exist. Another way her name could be rearranged once the ‘x’ is taken out is “oni,” which means demon/monster. There’s also ‘ion,’ and ions are both unstable and incomplete, like her. Also, the way her name is pronounced, “shee-ohn,” sounds like “shion,” which is the Japanese name for a flower known in English as the Aster Tataricus. In Hanakotoba, the Japanese Language of flowers, asters symbolise remembrance, specifically the phrase, “I won’t forget you.” The word ‘aster’ comes from the greek word, ‘ἀστήρ,’ meaning ‘star.’ Also, “shio” means “tide,” symbolising her connection to Kairi. ”Xion” could also be a reference to “Zion,” which is Hebrew for Jerusalem, which, in the Bible, is known as the Promised Land or the Heaven on Earth. There is also a song in Days called "Vector to the Heavens," and it plays while Xion and Roxas are fighting each other.
Lea/Axel - “Axel” means “Bringer of Peace,” and “Lea” means “Bringer of Good News.” Lea is also another word for a small hill. And, of course, "Axel" is "Lea" with an "x" in it.
Wayfinder Trio - TAV
Aqua - means “water” in Latin, symbolising the connection to Kairi
Terra - means “earth” in Latin, symbolising the connection to Riku
Ventus - means “wind” in Latin, symbolising the connection to Sora, and although Ventus is now proven not to be the killer of Strelitzia, he was present for her death, and Lauriam's dream started deviating from the memory of him and Strelitzia in the flower field the moment a gust of wind blew by...
Lost Trio
Naminé - "nami” means “wave” or “ocean wave” in Japanese, which relates to Kairi. "ne” means "sound", so it can be translated as “sound of the ocean wave”. “né” (with the acute accent) means “born” (It’s the past participle of the French verb “naître,” which means “to be born”) and so it can also be translated to “born of the ocean wave,” and this fits perfectly as she came from Kairi.
Vanitas - means “empty” or “emptiness” in Latin. Can also mean “vanity” in Latin, which is a synonym for “pride”. Also, his name is similar to Ventus’ name, and his name and Sora's are written the same way in kanji.
Riku Replica - He’s... A replica... of Riku... Figure it out.
Foretellers + Luxu/MoM Apprentices
Ava - short for “avaritia,” Latin for “greed,” one of the seven deadly sins
Invi - short for “invidia,” Latin for “envy,” another of the seven deadly sins
Gula - Latin for “gluttony,” another of the seven deadly sins
Aced - short for “acedia,” Latin for “sloth,” another of the seven deadly sins
Ira - Latin for “wrath,” another of the seven deadly sins. This could also be a reference to "Ira Einhorn," known as "The Unicorn Killer" as "einhorn" is "unicorn" in German. Ira is the Unicorn. Could this be symbolising something...?
Luxu - “luxu” is short for “luxuria,” Latin for “lust,” another of the seven deadly sins. Also “luxu” has the prefix “lux,” meaning “light”
(Fun fact - Even though the foretellers are named after the seven deadly sins, their personalities seem to follow the opposite virtue attributed to their sin.)
Dandelions
Strelitzia - a “strelitzia” is a kind of flower known as a “bird of paradise.” Strelitzias symbolise joy, beauty and immortality. Her brother, Lauriam, is also named after a flower. Also, she’s a part of the Dandelions, which are also a kind of flower. (Although Ventus is now proven not to be her killer, he was present for her death, and Lauriam's dream started deviating from the memory of Strelitzia and him in the flower field the moment a gust of wind blew by...)
Lauriam/Marluxia - a “lauriam” is a type of flower (I think a type of rose? Whenever I tried to search it up, it would only give me KH stuff His keyblade is named “Divine Rose” and his scythe is named “Graceful Dahlia”; his sister’s name is “Strelitzia,” another type of flower commonly known as the “bird of paradise” and their favourite meeting place is a flower field. Yes, this is FLOWER POWER. His name is also a combination of two words: "laurel" and "memoriam". Laurels are plants (oh look, another plant) used to make wreaths (leaf crowns) and they symbolise kings and royalty. In KHIII, we also see him in the Kingdom of Corona. "Corona" means "crown" in Latin, relating to the previous sentence about laurels. Laurels are also known to be lightning-resistant, relating to his relationship with Larxene/Elrena. "memoriam" relates to Strelitzia, and how he "he seem(s) to live and die solely for (her)," and how she was the most important person in the world to him and yet he somehow forgot her. “Marluxia” is just “lauriam” with an “x” in it.
Ephemer - from the word “ephemeral,” referring to when something “lasts a very short amount of time”. This comes from Greek, and might be referencing the fact that we, as the player, only knew him for a short amount of time before he disappeared. Fans originally thought his name was “Ephemera,” however, that was an incorrect fan translation.
Skuld - In Norse mythology, “Skuld” is the name of a Norn. Norns choose who live and die in battle. This might hint on her having to make a difficult decision later... Skuld is the Norn of the Future, which makes sense as she (most likely) time travels into the future. “Skuld” might also possibly mean “debt.” Also see “Urd”.
Brain - from the word “brain,” obviously. But 'brain' is also a kind of computer virus, and Brain states that he wants to be the virus that will alter the future. (However, in the KHIII secret reports, it's noted that the author [supposedly Luxu] called the imposter "a virus in the program," however, Brain is revealed to not be the imposter.) Fans originally thought his name translated to "Blaine," as the root Japanese word "burein," translates to both.
Masters Trio
Xehanort - take out the “x” and it’s an anagram of “a throne,” referencing Master Xehanort (the 13 thrones in Organisation XIII, the throne that MX sits in when watching Terra and Aqua do their Mark of Mastery, I bet there’s way more examples); “no heart,” referencing Xemnas (as he has no heart, No Heart is the name of the secret boss in BBS); “another,” referencing Ansem (symbolising how Xehanort can put his heart in others, creating other Xehanorts); “no earth” (reference to Xehanort possessing Terra) or “tan hero”. On its own, it is also an anagram of “exhortan,” a form of “exhortar,” which is Spanish for “to urge, persuade, exhort, etc.” and Xehanort is known to be very manipulative.
Eraqus - anagram of “square,” as in “Square Enix.” Also, the fact that Master Keeper/Master’s Defender is in the shape of an “E” is not just a reference to Eraqus’ name starting with “E,” but it also stands for the second part of the name of the publisher, “Enix.”
Yen Sid - MY NAME SPELLED BACKWARDS IS DISNEY
Dark Road Gang
Urd - Also known as ‘Urðr’ or ‘Wyrd’ in Norse mythology, Urd is one of the three Norns that decide peoples’ fates. Urd is the Norn of the Past. See ‘Skuld’ for more information.
Vor - “Vor” comes from the Norse goddess, “Vör,” the goddess of wisdom. “Vör” means “aware,” or “knowledge out of darkness,” which is pretty interesting, seeing as this is Kingdom Hearts.
Bragi - In Norse mythology, Bragi is the god of poetry and music, and the son of Odin. “Bragi” means “poet”. Also note how similar his name is to both “Braig” and “Brain”...
Hermod - Name comes from ‘Hermóðr’ in Norse mythology, son of Odin. Considered the messenger of the gods, and was the only person brave enough to try to bring his brother, Baldr, back from the dead. He is the equivalent of the Greek god, “Hermes,” who is also the son of an important god as is also known as a messenger of the gods. Hermod also shares the same prefix with Hermes.
Baldr - In Norse mythology, Baldr is “brave and just.” As he cannot be hurt, gods found entertainment in throwing objects at him. However, one day the evil god Loki deceived the god, Höd, who was blind, to throw mistletoe at Baldr. Mistletoe was Baldr’s only weakness, and so he died. We have yet to see this character.
Master Odin - Odin is the main god in Norse mythology. He is known as the “all-father,” and is said to be very wise. He is the god of war, poetry, death, runes and magic.
Organisation XIII
Xemnas - it’s “Ansem” with an “x” in it. It’s also an anagram for “mansex.” Nomura, you cannot say that is a coincidence, you totally intended that.
Isa/Saix - “Isa” means “moon,” which makes sense as he is known as “the Luna Diviner.” The moon turns him savage. “Isa” also means “Devoted to God,” “ice” or “iron”. I really don’t know about the significance of the last three to Isa specifically.
Others
DiZ - “DiZ” stands for “Darkness in Zero” (also in Japanese it looks similar to “Deizu” which sounds like the word “days” or “daze” in English.)
Ansem - “Ansem” is an anagram for “Mensa,” which is a club of smart scientists, which is what both Wise Ansem and Ansem SoD both are.
Yozora - “night sky” in Japanese. This shows that he is connected and is some sort of counterpart to Sora. Also, he shares his name meaning with Noctis Caelum” from Final Fantasy XV, except Noctis’ name is in Latin.
Theory Names (Unconfirmed)
Master of Masters (theory) - Although we haven’t been given a name yet, there is one deadly sin that we’re missing - Pride. Also known as “superbia,” in Latin. Seeing as all the foretellers names are two syllables, it would be logical to assume that MoM’s name is “Super.” (However... lame it may sound.) On the mysterious black box that MoM gives to Luxu, it says “Xsuper,” (with the “x” most likely referring to the Recusant’s Sigil) further supporting this argument.
Luxord (theory) - Although his Somebody’s name is unknown, it is very likely to be “Ludor,” which is Latin for “to play.” Luxord is a gambler, who’s special powers involve cards, and KHuX was originally supposed to be a card game. Also, “ludus” is Latin for “I am.” This is also the root of the “Luxord Is The Player” theory (I am the player!). There is also a casino called the “Luxor Casino” in Las Vegas. Also, if you split his name in half, “Lux Ord” means “light century.”
Demyx (theory) - Although his Somebody’s name is also unknown, it’s most likely to be “Emyd,” which comes from “emydura,” a species of Australian short-necked freshwater turtle. Demyx's powers are water-related. Could this link to Aqua, Kairi, Xion or Naminé?
Verdandi (theory) - We’ve had Urd, the Norn of the Past and Skuld, the Norn of the Future. Verdandi, or “Verðandi” in Old Norse, is the Norn of the Present - the only Norn we’re missing. Could this be the name of a new Kingdom Hearts character?

- Added "This could also be a reference to "Ira Einhorn," known as "The Unicorn Killer" as "einhorn" is "unicorn" in German. Ira is the Unicorn. Could this be symbolising something...?" to Ira's paragraph. Credit to @LoneFox
- Added "Note that I'm taking lots of information from fans, not official sources." to the introduction because clarity == good
- Added "And, of course, "Axel" is "Lea" with an "x" in it." to Axel/Lea's paragraph because... why not?
- Added "His name is also a combination of two words: "laurel" and "memoriam". "memoriam" relates to Strelitzia, and how he "he seem(s) to live and die solely for (her)," and how she was the most important person in the world to him and yet he somehow forgot her." to Lauriam/Marluxia's paragraph, thanks to @DraceEmpressa
- Added ", and although Ventus is now proven not to be the killer of Strelitzia, he was present for her death, and Lauriam's dream started deviating from the memory of him and Strelitzia in the flower field the moment a gust of wind blew by..." to Ventus' paragraph because WHY NOT THE MORE THEORIES THE MERRIER I GUESS
- Added "(Although Ventus is now proven not to be her killer, he was present for her death, and Lauriam's dream started deviating from the memory of Strelitzia and him in the flower field the moment a gust of wind blew by...)" to Strelitzia's paragraph because balance
- Replaced "I’m not quite sure what her connection is with birds or paradises, but" with "Strelitzias symbolise joy, beauty and immortality." in Strelitzia's paragraph. Thank you to @KikiXsuper for that!
- Replaced "Demyx's powers are water and music, which is similar to Kairi's name meanings. Are the two connected?" from Demyx's paragraph with "Demyx's powers are water-related. Could this link to Aqua, Kairi, Xion or Naminé?"
