Spoiler ShowThe Trial of Anubis
(Spirits of the Divine)
The sound of steel striking steel rang out. His heart was pounding in his chest, acting much like a caged bird that was frantically trying to escape its prison. Rolling across the ground, he came to a stop when he collided with a tree. His muscles ached painfully, every last one searing him with fire. The dark anklet located on his left ankle burned, alerting him to the fact he had to end this fight soon or risk destroying himself.
Aiden, are you sure you can do this?
The words were silky smooth, it wrapped around him as if it were a security blanket that he’d decided to finally pull out of the closet after years of neglect.
Pushing himself back onto his feet, Aiden took a moment to compose him before he went after his target again. Focusing on the Egyptian deity in his head, Aiden responded mentally, Yeah, I’m sure I can Anubis. Let’s end this! Aiden welcomed the rush of power that moved through his veins, and he didn’t think as he struck out at his attacker. He’d make sure the jerk paid for the pain he’d inflicted upon Amy, Horus and Anubis.
Even so, Aiden was terrified if he was being honest.
Aiden opened his eyes, returning to the present instead of the memory of the fight. He saw all of the pantheons that were gathered. Egyptian, Norse, Greek, Roman, Celtic, Japanese. It seemed as if every pantheon had a representative there, his eyes found Rae; a boy with dark skin and dark eyes, the blonde hair on his head coming as a shock given his Egyptian descent. His eyes easily finding the other teenager’s limiter, a gold eye of Horus cuff located on his left wrist. He tore his gaze from him, his eyes finding his best friend Seth, the boy’s eyes wide with confusion as he tried to figure out why they were there.
A soft smile spreading across his face, Aiden caught a glimpse as Anubis went about setting up the scales with the feather of truth on one of the trays. He knew what would happen if their sins outweighed the truth, and he knew the purpose of these scales. He couldn’t bring himself to look at Anna or Tyler, the two standing off by their respective divine partners as they discussed things. “Anubis, what are you doing? Take your seat, this meeting will begin once Osiris gets here.†Ra spoke, his blue eyes glittering with some sort of emotion that Aiden couldn’t identify.
Anubis froze at the command, struggling to do his duties and to obey the oath he’d taken long ago to obey Ra’s commands. Giving as much strength as he could, Aiden took a step toward to Anubis only to see the Egyptian deity to hold up a hand to signal him to wait. Muscles tensing at the signal, Aiden looked at the ground as Anubis’s words drifted into the air, “No Ra, I’ll stay here. Osiris will not be coming because he’s been murdered, and I killed him.â€
A pin dropping to the ground would have been loud in the silence that followed the declaration. Aiden glanced at Seth, seeing the way the color had drained from his friend’s face as he realized what would happen next. Set was leaning heavily against the throne behind him, trying to keep himself upright as his son’s words bounced around in his head. Ra was the first to recover, and Aiden wanted to hide when Ra snarled, “What did you say boy?â€
Anubis raised his head high, bravado being the only reason Anubis wasn’t trembling in the face of Ra’s anger. “I killed Osiris. My trial may begin now, but please, don’t punish the boy for my crimes.â€
Aiden tried to lunge forward at that, fear making his heart race as he screamed wordlessly at Anubis. A jackal materialized out of thin air, pinning Aiden to the stone floor of the throne room. He looked around, seeing the way all of the different deities tried to figure out what to say; he didn’t dare look to Set and Bastet, dreading what he’d see in their faces. More than that though, he dreaded what he’d see in Seth’s and Anna’s faces.
Liv, the Norwegian girl that hosts Odin, stepped forward to speak first. Her eyes drifting past Anubis and Aiden, she bowed to Ra and asked respectfully, “If I may, Osiris was a psychopomp, Anubis is a psychopomp. May we deal with this trial while you watch over us, sir?â€
Aiden held his breath as Ra thought the request over, and then Ra nodded and said, “Very well, you psychopomps may deal with him. Liv, if you would please begin the trial?â€
Liv nodded her head, before she focused unnatural violet eyes on Aiden and spoke solemnly, “Aiden Noctis, Anubis, you two stand trial for the murder of Osiris and Omari Barakat. This is an act of treason, even more of one given the fact we are being picked off one by one so we can’t afford to have one of our one murdering us. In my eyes, and in Odin’s, you two are both guilty of treason. The reason why, is that as far as we can tell, this murder was unprovoked. What do you have to say in your defense?â€
“Lies! Osiris had gone mad with old age! I was saving us all from him!†Anubis snapped, his eyes burning with a fire that Aiden wasn’t used to seeing. “He-he-he, Osiris wouldn’t want to be the monster he became.†Anubis whispered his voice barely audible to hide the shake in it.
Liv seemed shocked by the outburst, before she could speak though, another host stepped forward to state their opinion next. It was a man this time; he believed their name to be Henry. Seeing Izanami standing behind her host, Aiden dropped his gaze back to the ground as his nerves made it feel as if he’d been electrocuted. He was grateful for the rush of strength from Anubis, even as he sensed the Egyptian deity’s own fear at the idea of them standing trial.
“Anubis is probably one of the more laidback psychopomps, his host Aiden is also more levelheaded than some of the rest of us. Pointedly you Liv and Yui,†Henry shot them a dirty look, getting both the girls in line. Then turning his attention to Ra again, Henry continued, “I doubt they’d kill Osiris and Omari without a justifiable reason, think of their past actions. They wouldn’t be this rash!â€
Aiden scrambled to his feet after the jackal had backed up, standing tall he held his head high and spoke clearly, “We did murder them, and someone could say we did it in cold-blood. But---“ He saw the look Henry shot him, a clear “shut up! I’m trying to save your ass,†but Aiden continued regardless of the warning look, causing Henry to bury his face in his hands with, “But we stand by our decision to end Osiris and Omari’s lives. It was for the best of all of us!â€
He felt cold eyes on him, burning holes in his skin and trying to tear his soul from his body. Looking in the direction of the person responsible, Aiden saw Thanatos watching him intently. The slow, unfeeling smirk that spread across Thanatos’s face made Aiden’s blood run cold. He was distracted when a familiar head of dark hair stepped forward, Tyler’s gaze steady despite the Greco-Cherokee young man looking like he was ready to pass out due to whatever reason.
“I second Henry’s vote, the two are innocent in this crime. Their actions previously lend to this being an act of self-defense, and besides…†Tyler looked ashamed here, almost as if he blamed himself for what had transpired before he continued strongly, “Osiris and Omari struck first, Aiden and Anubis had to retreat to the Greek underworld to fully heal! There was something seriously wrong with Osiris if he’d cause that much harm to someone he once saw as a son. I standby the verdict that they are innocent. Although you people will probably deem my vote biased because of Hades; along with the fact that Aiden’s a classmate of mine. I still standby my vote.†Tyler nodded his head, before stepping backwards to stand by Hades, leaning against the Greek deity’s throne for all the support that it was worth. Aiden saw the way Hades reached a hand forward, placing it on Tyler’s shoulder in a comforting gesture as he spoke, “I do not see where a crime was committed.â€
The next to step forward was a girl of Egyptian descent, her dark eyes flashing with an emotion that Aiden couldn’t place. He did recognize her though, her clothing was a dress of white cotton, it exposed her shoulders and only went to her knees. The gold choker she wore held a charm of her psychopomp partner. She had off-white cotton shoes, giving the appearance of her being a servant girl from olden days. Behind her stood Kherty, a deity whose intentions could be as chaotic as Set’s.
Speaking of, Set was drained of all color as his eyes met Kherty. Set tried to rise from his seat, to move between Aiden, Anubis and Kherty; only to be ordered to sit back down by Ra. He watched the pained look on Set’s face as his two conflicting desires warred inside him, carefully motioning for Set to sit back down he trained his eyes back onto Kherty and his host. Bowing low, Aiden spoke respectfully, “Kherty, Fatima, it’s nice to see you two again.â€
Fatima’s eyes hardened at the greeting, her face showing zero sign of amusement as she spoke chilly, “Aiden, you shouldn’t have been so rash. Did you think we wouldn’t have found out about this?â€
He had expected people to find out, he’d even been about to say this when Yui, an Asian girl stalked forward and forced him to back up toward Hades’s throne. The rush of air as her hand went past his head, slamming against the throne, Yui spat, “What the hell? Are you a freaking idiot!? Maybe you can’t tell, ironically, but the votes are in favor of killing your dumb ass!â€
“I had my reasons,†he whispered, trying to keep his voice steady in the face of Yui’s rage.
“Oh really? What are those reasons then? Because like Yui said, you’re on the verge of being executed, or at least Anubis is. You’d better have a good reason…†Fatima spoke, her voice devoid of all emotion, her face blank to help conceal her thoughts.
Aiden looked around at all the deities and hosts gathered there, contemplating on how he should explain his case. He carefully removed Yui’s hand from beside his head, and moving to the center of the room, Aiden once again announced, “We had our reasons for cutting down Omari, and thus Osiris. Despite customs having changed, Osiris was still clinging to the old ways of proving one’s ‘dominance’ over those that he wanted.†He glanced at Amy, seeking her permission for his next words.
Instead of granting it, Amy stepped forward and spoke, “Omari was controlling every action I did through multiple forms of abuse. Osiris was doing the same thing to Horus, including dominating him in the way that the myths said that Set had attempted. Horus wasn’t the only one to be subjected to that either…†Her voice trailed off as tears sprang to her eyes as the memories swirled in her head.
Aiden wanted to move to comfort Amy, but he knew that he couldn’t do it. Looking at them all, Aiden continued, “Osiris tried to kill Anubis twice before the fight, once when he got into a disagreement with Set, giving Anubis the scar on his neck; and the other was when we were too weak to stay in the Duat to recover. During the second attempt, Osiris had been torturing Anubis. Omari? He attempted to attack Seth from behind, there was death magic in it. It would have killed Seth, it damn near killed me when I intercepted the strike. Neither of us would have survived in the Duat if we hid there to recover, so we went to the Greek underworld to heal. Tyler and Hades guarded us during that time, it’s only because of them that we’re having this trial today!â€
Rae seemed to take in the words, just as Ra was. The two shared a look, nodded and then Rae commented hesitantly, “If you can get one more person to voice such accusations against Osiris and Omari, then we could put this down as self-defense….â€
Calla looked up from her book, leaving no doubt whom she was partnered with. Shutting it with an audible thump she looked at everyone evenly once she had their attention. “Just one more person, Master Ra?â€
Ra held her gaze for several moments, seeming to be judging the weight of her words as Thoth’s host before he answered, “Yes, Calla, just one more person.â€
Aiden didn’t believe what he was seeing, and judging from the emotions rolling across the link, neither did Anubis as Calla said softly, yet full of conviction, “Omari didn’t just assault Aiden and Amy, I received much of the same treatment the short period I hung out with him. He said he had wanted some help studying, and being who I am, I did go over to help him. It went well at first, then after about two visits it turned…sour. He forced himself on me, despite my protests. Not that he succeeded, but still...â€
Her cheeks got a pink tint at the memories, even as her mouth twisted into a frown. Calla shook her head, dismissing the memories from her mind, she continued with conviction, “Omari was a threat to us all, Aiden did us a favor by removing him from play, along with getting rid of Osiris.â€
She looked around her, daring the others to speak out against her. Kherty took a step forward, only to hesitate when his host raised her hand and said coldly, “Stay put, Kherty.â€
Aiden saw the way she was analyzing the words of those that spoke up in his defense. Specifically, Calla’s words, who was just matching her calculating look with one of her own. After a moment, Fatima sighed, “While it is understandable, and done in self-defense, we still couldn’t afford the death of Osiris or Omari, we’re being hunted by a child of death, Aiden. So, while I can understand your actions, I cannot support it. I see you as guilty as charged in the death of Osiris, but I will leave it in the court of Ra.†She stepped back, forcing Kherty to follow her lead.
All eyes turned to Rae and Ra, awaiting the verdict. It was a little jarring when Ra asked the other leading deities, “What do you think of this trial? Is Anubis guilty of treason? Or do you not see a crime?â€
“I don’t see a crime,†Zeus commented, seeming to be looking anywhere but at Aiden and Anubis.
“I see no crime,†Hades second, opening the door for not just ruling deities.
“There is no crime that I see.†Tsukuyomi spoke levelly. Amaterasu parroted her sibling’s verdict.
“I don’t see a crime,†Odin spoke, seeming to have a change of heart from earlier.
“There is no crime.†Arawn remarked.
Wang Yuan seconded Arawn’s remark, followed by Mictecacihuatl and Mictlantecuhtli. Yeomra voiced his agreement, even if he seemed a little displeased with the verdict. Izanami, Supay, Aker, Seker, Kalama, Baldur, Loki. Neptune, Aita, Kali. Shiva, Maui, Ahti, Kuu. The agreements kept coming, at least one from each pantheon. He didn’t know why there was so many in agreement, but Aiden wasn’t about to protest to it. Eventually Ra seemed to find it satisfactory, for he looked at Anubis and spoke firmly, “Get back to your place young one, there’s no need for a trial.â€
Anubis bowed deeply before hurrying back toward Set and Horus, grabbing Aiden as he went. Being placed next to Seth and Amy, he felt himself shaking with terror and relief. Aiden tried to take a steadying breath, but he couldn’t quite manage the act. Anna wrapped him up in a hug, crying softly into his shoulder as her own relief overwhelmed her. Stroking her hair, Aiden glanced at Ra and mouthed, “Thank you.â€
Ra got a confused look on his face, trying to figure it out even as a tiny smile flitted about his face. Before Aiden knew what happened, the different pantheons had moved on to the next matter at hand. Even so, he caught a glimpse of Set giving Anubis a tight hug as he whispered things into his son’s ear. Then the two deities returned to where the other deities were, Horus right behind them so they could participate in the next discussion.

Spoiler ShowCalm Yourself He Says to Me
He raised the gun to her head, his hand shaking as he stared at her. It wasn’t what he wanted to do; he didn’t want to endanger her in this fashion. The blank expression on his face though revealed nothing, the only reason it was visible was because of his hand. The raven haired girl stood there, her blue dress smeared with dirt even as her blue eyes stared back at him. He could see the fear in them, he could even feel the tightness of it building in his chest as she said, “You and me both know you don’t want to do this. Put the gun down, I promise we can find another way out.â€
He shook his head; there was no way that they could win. The voice in his head wouldn’t let them. Someone had to pay the price; someone had to suffer in order for the end to come about. He closed his eyes tight, trying to drown out the words and emotions that were threatening to strangle him. You’re weak; this is why you’re in the situation that you’re in boy. The male voice spoke, the words coiled around him like a serpent. He heard the words from the girl in front of him, trying to call out to him even as the shadows swirled around him.
The images of his personal hell circled back into his head. The time he was seven-years-old. It had been when he and his best friend had decided to go out horseback riding. It had ended poorly with his best friend getting hurt, the bone in his leg had been practically shattered and the horse had gotten a bullet between the eyes because of his father. He hadn’t been allowed to go to the hospital, and in his panic he hadn’t been able to recall what happened to spook the horse. He’d gotten his arm broken for the lack of information.
He’d also landed in an abusive household and he’d gotten the cold shoulder from his friend for it. He’d nearly died in that house, only for him to end up running away to the orphanage and refused to return to them. He’d had to testify in court against them, something that had scared the crap out of him. He felt his stronger self-latch onto the fear he’d stirred up from the memory, he felt himself start to get pulled beneath the waves.
“Come on Adam, we both know you don’t want this.â€
The words were a plea; he reached out a hand, trying to reach the voice that had spoken them. The darkness pulled him down though, letting the other personality out of its cage. He watched as it took control, watched helplessly as it opened his eyes. Instead of pale brown though, gold-violet eyes stared at the girl. He stood there, his head cocked to the side as he contemplated what to do.
Raising the pistol with a steady hand, he spoke coldly, “Calm yourself.â€
“Where’s Adam?†Mavis snapped her eyes hardening as she realized who was in control.
“Don’t know, but if you leave a message, I’ll see about relaying it to him at a different point.†Arthur intoned a bored look on his face.
Adam wanted to call out to Mavis, to tell her to run away while she still could. He knew what Arthur would do to her, and it terrified him more than anything. Looking around the area of his mind that he was in, Adam tried to find something that would work out in his favor.
An idea coming to him, Adam tried to forcefully take control back only to be tossed back down. He came under the verbal assault of Arthur’s rage, taking the lashing as it came, he covered his ears to try and drown out the words. It wasn’t working though, no matter how hard he tried to ignore it.
He was forced off of the ground, the sensation of his airway being cut off had him gasping for breath; trying to force the air into his lungs only for it to not work. He opened eyes he hadn’t realized he’d shut, and the fury that met his gaze had Adam feeling like he was a child again. The little bit of air he could get was stole from him as his back collided with the wall, Adam whimpered softly in protest even as the barrel of the pistol pressed against his forehead.
He glared at Arthur, trying to seem as defiant as possible in light of his terror.
The pressure started to build in the barrel, and the crashing waves of fury slammed into his body, threatening to break him. He didn’t want to get broken, not again. His defiance melted away again into fear as the ringing of two shots echoed in his mind. The last thing that captured Adam’s attention was the white-hot pain that moved through the air.
Mavis bolted upright in her bed, drenched with sweat from the nightmare. She knew what it promised; she’d been having the same nightmare ever since Adam had disappeared. It was one of two recurring dreams; she’d nearly driven off the road on more than one occasion because of it.
Getting up she glanced at the time and decided that it was time to slip into the Otherworld, even if it wasn’t optimal time for travel. She focused her energy, tapping into her own Persona to get over to there. She sensed it when the area around her shifted, and a moment later she saw she was there. Looking around her, she didn’t spot any Shadows right away but she knew better than to let her guard down. Checking the supplies in her bag, Mavis took a shaky breath and got moving. If she stood still, she was likely to die.
It took at least half an hour of walking to find him.
Adam was sitting on the steps of a building, his eyes focused intently on the pistol in his hand. She slowed her pace, pulling the gun out that had been hidden away in her bag. She’d try to talk to him, to see about smoothing things over before Arthur came out to play. Her heart pounded, telling her just how difficult that desire would actually be. She saw the way he was moving, calm and confident. The only indication of his fear was the slight shake to his hand, she knew the truth though. Adam was terrified of what Arthur was making him do.
She found herself saying the word from her dream. She watched as it unfolded the way it had in her dream until Arthur had taken control, she’d seen the way Adam’s eyes had gone dead right before they turned to Arthur’s.
The asshole decided to talk to her. “Calm yourself,†his voice was frigid, making her sure that it would’ve been warmer on the titanic.
She didn’t enjoy asking him what she had in her dream, nor the bored response that she got from him. Watching as he seemed to grow distracted, she raised the gun so it was aimed at Arthur’s head, mirroring the one he had pointed at her.
“Let him go,†she whispered.
Arthur seemed to focus on her, one eye a pale brown and the other a gold-violet color. It caused her to hesitate, the gun dropping to his right shoulder. Hardening her resolve at his next words, they reignited the fire in her as he commented, “No. The boy belongs to me, and you will too once I’m finished.â€
She heard Isis telling her to be careful; she also knew that the only way to get Adam back was to go through with her plan. She acknowledged Isis’s advice, and asked Isis to be ready to heal her and Adam. She saw it when Adam caught onto what she was planning, and then before she could stop herself, she squeezed the trigger sending a bullet speeding toward Arthur.
The second bark of the gun alerted her to what was going to happen.
She closed her eyes and braced herself for the pain that was to come.
And here's another entry from the Spirits of the Divine series.
Spoiler ShowOnly the Wind
(Spirits of the Divine)
Set watched the young boy that moved through the desert; his head bowed to try and keep the sand out of his eyes. The boy had dark skin and messy dark hair, the boy’s tiny build was made even more apparent by the boy’s shabby clothing. The storm deity watched unamused as the boy seemed to be trying to find something. It was quickly approaching nighttime in the desert, which meant the temperature was bound to drop to freezing soon enough. Looking out at the west horizon, he saw that there were storm clouds rolling in quickly; which would only drop the temperature faster.
He inhaled deeply, enjoying the smell of the storm. His attention was returned though to the boy as he heard the smallest of whines coming from him. Focusing closer on the boy, he saw that there was the faint flicker of a jackal head that replaced the seemingly normal head of the child. While his face remained neutral, Set’s red eyes widened in surprise as he realized who he was staring at. He fought off the desire to run to him, to wrap the child up in a protective hug. He looked away, thinking of what his father had once told him: sometimes to let a child grow to their full potential, you had to let them stumble.
Set could tell that this was one of those times. Even as the boy pulled the thin cloak, something that had just registered, closer around him to try and keep some of the approaching chill to the side. Watching as the boy raised his head, Set listened as the child questioned, “What do you want Set? How come you are bringing a storm on someone who’s traveling? I-I…†The boy’s voice broke; the soft sound of a sniffle caught his attention.
Was this boy terrified of storms? Was this boy afraid of him?
It broke Set’s heart to think that was a possibility, since he didn’t want that to be the case. He knew that the humans already cast a suspicious light on him as it was, and his fellow deities looked at him with suspicious eyes because of what he’d done to Osiris. Even his own wife had taken their son and given him to Osiris to raise, the two deities doing their best to keep Set from seeing the boy so it was only stolen glimpses that Set had gotten of his son. His son would be about the same age of the boy that was traveling in the desert now, or going by human years.
Set knew that in truth the boy was the same son he’d lost.
Suddenly before Set knew it, the storm was on top of the two of them. The wind howled with rage, lightning flashed in the sky followed close behind by loud claps of thunder. The boy had fallen to the ground, covering his ears as terrified whimpers slipped from his mouth. Set didn’t feel the sting of the rain; his eyes were focused solely on the boy. He breathed in the smell of rain soaked earth, and focusing his powers, he quieted the storm to a softer drizzle. He wouldn’t let his son come to associate storms as something to be feared. He wanted the boy to come to find them as a comfort. Manifesting his own worn cloak to hide him, Set flipped the hood up and walked toward the boy. Crouching down, he placed a hand gently on the boy’s shoulder. Staring at him from the safety of the shadows of his hood, Set spoke gently, “You’re safe now, the storm’s gone. What’s your name little one? Where are you headed to?â€
The boy looked at him with suspicious velvet brown eyes; wisdom well beyond the boy’s years shining in the depths. Seeming to steel his resolve, the boy answered, “Anubis. I wanted to see if I could find my father, apparently he resides in the desert after my cousin forced him to live there.â€
His heart warmed at the news. His brother and wife hadn’t been able to twist Anubis’s mind against him. He smiled softly at the words, the smile growing more obvious as he noticed the subtle chaotic whirlwind that spun in Anubis’s soul. He could see that at the heart of the storm were the traits that humans would come to associate with Anubis, traits that Anubis would need for the upcoming years. Helping the young deity to his feet, Set advised in a fatherly fashion, “Stay with me young one and we’ll find your father.â€
Anubis took a moment to think the words over, seeming to weigh them against something before he nodded in answer. Set was surprised at how warm Anubis’s small hand was in his, only to recover quickly as he took a couple of steps forward, knowing the way to the building where he’d reveal himself to Anubis. Thinking of Anubis’s terror at the storm, he glanced at the boy and added, “You don’t have to be afraid of storms, it’s only the wind. Besides, there’s no way Set would ever let it hurt you.â€
Anubis pondered it only for a moment, and then the boy shot back, “How do you know that?â€
Set didn’t know how to answer the question without giving himself away, something that he didn’t want to do quite yet. He wasn’t ready to face that storm yet, especially since he knew it wasn’t one where he could just convince himself that it was something as harmless as being the wind. He could sense the boy’s fear, something that he wasn’t used to being able to do. Stopping after a couple more steps, Set moved to be in front of Anubis. Crouching down, he placed his hands on Anubis’s shoulders. The boy’s face surprisingly didn’t show his fear, even if his eyes had a bright shine to them. “Trust me, he wouldn’t let the storms or monsters of the desert hurt you. As long as he’s able to protect you, you’ll always be safe in the desert.†Set said firmly, trying to convince Anubis he was telling the truth.
A puzzled light replaced the fear for a moment, after which a knowing smile spread across his face. Nodding his head, the young Anubis held him tight and whispered, “Okay, I’ll believe it. It’s only the wind that’s trying to scare me.†Then just as quickly, the boy released Set from the sudden hug and walked on ahead, his small stride full of confidence as something pulled him along. Following behind the boy, Set smiled a little to himself as he thought about his old mantra that he’d just passed onto Anubis.
