As you know, most of the Disney classic animated films are based on an older work. But how many of those older versions have you actually read or seen?

To help you get started, here's a list of all the sources I'm aware of. Note that I'm not including any one of the animated shorts that are wholly original or just based on general myth, since most of them are and I'd be here all day, but I will account for any feature films or package films that are 100% original.

Snow White, Casey at the Bat, Cinderella, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, Peter and Wendy, The Sleeping Beauty, The Sword in the Stone (revised), Winnie-The-Pooh, The House at Pooh Corner, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, Hamlet, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Noah's Ark, The Emperor's New Clothes, Treasure Island, Chicken Little (actually it was Henny Penny and no, I don't remember the version), The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, The Snow Queen.

Bonus: Romeo and Juliet, Ali Baba and the King of Thieves, James and the Giant Peach, The Little Match Girl.

That's 22 with 4 bonuses!

When it comes to fairy tales, I don't remember that many I've read; mostly because we always have this voice in our heads telling us that we know the story as we've heard it told so many times, so why read them?

Being born in Denmark, I have of course read a bunch of H.C. Andersen (it's actually sen and not son, even though they mean the same), of the ones on this list, I remember for sure to have read: Steadfast Tin Soldier, Emperor's new Clothes, The Snow Queen and also Little Match Girl which is my favourite Andersen fairy tale. I'm not sure if I have read The Little Mermaid, but I do know most of the places where it goes against Disney.

For Snow White, again I don't remember if I have read the story, would have been when I was 6 or 7 years old, but I do remember having been in a play as one of the seven dwarves, where we included the poisoned comb.

For the other ones I know I've read:
Winnie the Pooh, Hunchback of Notre Dame (or Notre Dame de Paris as my version was called), Tarzan of the Apes, Genesis (Noah's Ark) & also an excerpt of Epic of Gilgamesh with a similar flood story, "The legend of Robin Hood", and children's versions of Aladdin and Ali Baba. I also think I've read a/the poem about Mulan that kept her story alive, but it might just have been an excerpt.

That gives me 8 stories I know for sure I've read, 2 bonuses, 2 easy readings/children's versions and a couple of fairy tales I cannot remember (most of them propably not).

Not quite as many as OP, but I've read countless other original fairy tales that Disney movies haven't touched on, and even more retellings of the original stories beyond Disney movies. I took a college course on fairy tales and have done quite a bit of reading, watching, and listening before and after that. I'm a huge fan of the both the source material and the retellings.
