The Hourglasses & What They Represent

Remember how we tried our hardest not to think about anything in KH3D because the more you think about the game, the easier it becomes to unravel the plot into a spiral of endless reduction that goes nowhere?

Well, let's go back to KH3D anyways.

Check those fancy hourglasses up there. Soak them in. What do you see? I happen to see violet, orange, yellow, red, green, and blue sand in them.

surprise! it's the gay pride flag! if anybody wanted more proof of kh3d being about sora and riku's love, here it is!

Six hourglasses with pretty basic colors? Pretty useless on their own, but if we think about the Foretellers + the 6th Apprentice, I think we can possibly assign some meaning to them.

Aced - Ursus - Sloth
Invi - Anguis - Envy
Ira - Unicornis - Wrath
Gula - Leopardos - Gluttany
Ava - Vulpes - Greed​

Now, there are a ton of colors on the Foretellers but none of them really match up to the colors shown in the hourglasses above. That sucks, but not all is lost. There are colors out there commonly associated with the Deadly Sins!

Pride - Violet
Envy - Green
Gluttony - Orange
Lust - Blue
Anger - Red
Greed - Yellow
Sloth - Light Blue​

All we have to do now is essentially line up our colors to our Foretellers~

Aced - Ursus - Sloth - Light Blue
Invi - Anguis - Envy - Green
Ira - Unicornis - Wrath - Red
Gula - Leopardos - Gluttany - Orange
Ava - Vulpes - Greed - Yellow​

That only leaves us with Violet unclaimed...
Pride.

What does all of this mean? I don't know. Pride/Superbia will be our 6th Apprentice (aka everybody's guess)? Xehanort is using the power of the Foretellers to time travel? Nothing whatsoever? Run wild with this random observation.

Hopefully I'm not late on this or something...

I still cling to the hope that most of DDD's story details were added with KH3 and KHX in mind, so that they might make sense in retrospect.

If this is one of those details I'm all for it and while the Sanctum of Time just screams "final boss area" to me, information on it is rare, so it could be part of a bigger scheme (like the Chamber of Repose).

On a slightly but not entirely unrelated note, doesn't the gear platform that you battle Young Xehanort in reminiscent of the gears that Aqua has to collect? Maybe Time-displaced Young Xehanort uses specialised gears as a tool to help time travel?

Gears are often associated with clocks (specifically, pocket-watches), Aqua presumably has to collect gears to turn back time in he Realm of Darkness, it's not too far-fetched of a correlation.

I'm convinced that either the series just isn't going to deal with the 7th or the 7th is the Master of Masters. Lust for power, light, etc. It is possible the Master of Masters is Pride, too, and the 6th is Lust. Essentially Young Xehanort's Keyblade essentially being the last "hourglass".

There is more to it like the idea that while the Foretellers are named after sins, they are meant to represent the cardinal virtues...but that is for another time.

Anyways, I'm with Shard of Truth. I hope they don't mean anything, and I'm growing a bit tired of literally everything needing to be tied together in this crazy series. I'd love for a video game to just be a video games (Same reason I wish Nomura never said he wants to come up with Story reasons as to why Sora reverts to level 1. It's a video game, we understand).

Sorry, got a little off track. Well, with what you've posted, It's not out of the question for those Hourglasses to be connected to the Fortellers, Kingdom Hearts X released just a year after Dream Drop Distance so I suppose the X storyline as in it's early stages of inception whilst Dream Drop Distance was in development.

OK, I will: BBS should've been titled KH0 & released on Wii so there would still have been some sort of numbered console KH game last gen. Osaka team should've gone straight to 3 after 0. DDD made up the 7 vs. 13 nonsense that wouldn't be a factor in 3's story, just have the full bodied Xehanort as the antagonist & leave it at that.

I disagree. Without DDD, the serious would not be what it is today.
Calling BBS "KH 0" would be so dumb. Would've confused people even more.

Much like the argument that BbS made the series more convoluted, DDD was a product of concepts KH2 introduced. I think they could have handled DDD better, and I think the could have avoided the idea of time travel with concepts they already had... but I guess it's just a little more interesting when you realize Xehanort did a whole bunch of tricks and shortcuts for the opportunity to absorb Sora into his ranks. Putting it on a home console... for some reason, I think that would also confuse people

tl;dr: it's all II's fault.
In a way, it's true. It is the game that started this whole "Ansem isn't actually Ansem because he's actually a guy called Xehanort but we're still gonna call him Ansem anyways oh yeah there're Nobodies too" mess that every game since has been trying to clean up.

I personally enjoyed the Xanatos Speed Chess for whatever reason. It seemed less about having a big pre-planned plot and more like connecting dots and opportunities that were already there to get the best results possible, which still requires some level of ingenuity. I'm almost disappointed that the plan didn't work out in the end.
