I've always wanted to write a book, but ideas fly by in my silly head FAR too fast. I'll start writing one thing, but then I'll think of a new topic and move on. Maybe short stories will be more my forte! So here's a crack at it; a little number that I like to call:

Spoiler ShowThe world of today is a brutal, black waste. Beauty has long since abandoned the cracked and dry shores; she went to seek out a more glorious place, as befitting her name. What land that was left to Men was scorched by the flames of the Awoken, who are the last gift that Beauty gave the Earth. They are also her final curse, and the punishment of Man.
The Awoken were brought aboveground by Man, when they could no longer live upon the surface. The Awoken do not sleep as they once did whilst they hibernated beneath the hundreds of miles of stone in the Earth's crust, but they hunt Man relentlessly. Once upon a time, the Awoken had a different name: Dragons.
The Dragons scoured the Earth and razed it so that it could be rid of the poison that was Man. Above and belowground the fires burned, and thousands upon thousands of souls were released into the heavens on both sides. The Awoken would never yeild to Man, but the opposite was also true. So both sides burned.
Dark creatures with skin of diamond from their long slumber in the Earth, ominous wingbeats and hot winds. These were the signs of Beauty's last creation. Man was pale and small, with very little physical power to fight the beasts that plagued them. They stood no chance. Yet somehow, someway, Man persisted. Until all that was left were a single child and a single beast, they fought. All creatures withered and slowly vanished from the Earth, leaving the two alone.
The child was far too young to be the savior of Man. Knowing this, the child offered a peace to the last of the Awoken, who was the fiercest, and most proud of Beauty's warriors. Declining the offer, the warrior gave the child a single day in which to prepare for death. Thus, the child declined the warrior's offer as well, refusing to be courteous when none had been shown before. The warrior remained rigid, shocked by the audacity of this lowly child of Man.
"I AM A WARRIOR OF BEAUTY!" The Awoken roared in outrage. "YOU DISGRACE THE MOTHER OF ALL WHEN YOU DISGRACE ME!" The warrior then struck the child down in a red haze of fury, as he had done to many a Man before.
As the child lay dying, the Awoken knew it was the end. What was there to live for with all of the beauty of life gone from the Earth? Ashamed of his pride, the warrior held the child and cursed his fate. The child lifted a small hand and placed it over the warrior's heart. Smiling, the child then uttered a single word.
"Beautiful."
The warrior looked down at the hand on his heart. He could not feel the child's touch through his thick scales, nor the warmth of the young body that was quickly fading in his arms. Then, the warrior thought of an ancient tale told by Man, the tale that Man had always held in their beliefs, even as they perished one by one.
A Dragon has a heart of stone, more beautiful than any precious metal or radiant gem. Their hearts are Beauty incarnate, the only power capable of bringing life to the dead, light to the darkness, and kindness from cruelty.
My great mother and creator gave me a gift even greater than life. She gave me the power to love, give life, and guide my destiny to whatever heights necessary. I will give this gift to the world. It is my duty. It is my choice. When the world is suffering, it is OUR job to end that suffering.
I shall give my heart, my life. My Dragon's gem.
