History

Year 839 post bellum.

Nearing to a millennium after the inevitable war between Homo sapiens and Homo superior, and the eradication of an entire species, the Earth is dying and has been for just in excess of a hundred years. Human world leaders wanted to annihilate all mutants and nuclear weaponry was the surest way to go. Not that it did not come with a price -- countless human lives too were lost during the war which ultimately reduced humanity to but a fraction of the population in 2010 A.D.. The end of the war marked the start of a new era, Year 0 post bellum.

There were those who foresaw the impending apocalypse, and to preserve life, they took in samples of wildlife, and altered their DNA to withstand the toxic effects of radiation; whether or not it was for principle, however, has been lost to time.

Led by none other than the brilliant minds of Charles Xavier and Hank McCoy, also known as "The Beast," scientists of both human and mutant race alike united to develop a means to salvage the world around them. Shi’ar technology acquired by the X-Men was altered and combined with existing Earth machinery to produce the S.R.N.s, Self-Replicating Nanobots, which attached onto DNA molecules to stabilize their structure from damage by radiation.

An excerpt from one of Dr. McCoy’s manuals:
A minute quantity is injected into the host. The host then is allowed to reproduce, forming offspring who also possess Nanobot-stabilized DNA, the genesis of cybernetically enhanced life. Fascinating.

..:: -- + -- ::..

As Fate would have it, an outbreak of experimental cyberhybrids was unavoidable.

The Nanobots not only strengthened an experiment’s genetics, but also, its biology: muscle and leaf, brain and trunk, were all augmented by particulate droids invisible to the naked eye. Eventually containment facilities could no longer hold back the artificially engineered breed of flora and fauna, and Year 28 post bellum began the series of break outs from experiment parks around the world.

What was not discovered during the experimental phase of Nanobot induction, was the acceleration in adaptability and evolution that would follow. No longer was reproduction bound within species or genera; Nanobots facilitated the breeding between organisms of entirely different kingdoms.

No one really knows how many species exist today, or even how they came to be, but outside the Hubs, the safety net of humanity, no one is truly safe.

Hubs were the only place humanity could survive in nuclear fallout Earth. Radiation levels were much higher then than they are now; before The Cleansing -- the colloquial name given to the times after the nuclear fallout, when the Earth cleansed itself as patient as Nature herself -- it was common knowledge that the Outside was uninhabitable. There remains, however, an exception: Foraminis Magneto, Latin for ‘The Pit of Magneto’, the 200 kilometer radius crater formed when nuclear assault reached the doors of Magneto’s Brotherhood. Here, Nature has yet to Cleanse herself due to the exorbitant amounts of radiation.

Magneto’s ability to manipulate electromagnetism was his own folly; the enhanced magnetic field, which perpetually enveloped him, was speculated to have amplified nuclear fission. This potentially caused the explosion, and therefore the radiation, from the atomic warheads to be greater than otherwise. Whether or not he truly was the cause remains unexplained. The depth of the pit left by the blast has yet to be determined: people who went down just never came back.

Though the atmosphere is safe to breathe today, and has been for nearing to five centuries, no one ever, ever, ventures out of the Hubs unless they are with the military, paid for Inter-Hub travel arrangements with the expansive Hub government, or had a death wish. The wildlife evolved much too fast and became much too savage; legend has it, plants did not always have jaws.

..:: -- + -- ::..

The dome-shaped structures are composed of interlinked hexagonal plates of leadened concrete, six-feet thick, and span the area of what would have been considered a large city. There are but thousands scattered around the globe, once keeping safe humans from the radioactive dust that choked the land, but now, their only purpose is to keep us safe from the feral beasts and perilous botany that bound the grasslands.

Within these Hubs though, life, human life, flourished. And nothing could stop the onward march of technology’s advancement, nor our reliance on it. Who owns the Hubs? No one really knows, but we all know this much: Whoever owns the Hubs owns us. Most are fine with that, convinced it's for their own good, but nothing lasts forever, and eventually energy sources will run out. Our life support systems will one day die out on us, and we will be left to fend off these creatures like shell-less turtles. Eden is coming to a close and Pandora’s Box is opening.

It is in this time of seeming hopelessness that rumors are spreading of the reappearance of mutantkind. Numerous reportings of strange sights and unexplained phenomena have been made from around the world, but with no real evidence to substantiate them.

Most of the people are wary; some are hysterically scared. True legends hardly ever die, and the tales of what mutantkind did, and caused, have lived on in the backgrounds of the day-to-day happenings of Hub life. A child back talks to his mother? "Do you want the mutants to eat you?" The stuff of legend may just become reality once again.

..:: -- + -- ::..

But will the mutants make a rise and save us in our hour of need, or will they only hasten our impending doom? Only time will tell...

Summary
  • The story begins in post-apocalyptic Earth, roughly one thousand years in the future, after the war between human and mutantkind.
  • Mutants have been extinct since the end of the war, but are making a return to existence.
  • Genetically engineered plants and animals escape into the wild, evolving at an accelerated pace.
  • Humans have only managed to survive in ‘Hubs’.

General Rules
  1. Mutant or human, you make the choice.
  2. No rules on affiliation, you can either be an antagonist or protagonist; we're okay with villains here!
  3. There is no official knowledge of the mutant re-existence yet, so please make your character histories in like of this, please.
  4. You will have to make a choice which Hub it is you wish to come from -- see below post by Oe98 for more details.
  5. Omega-level mutants -- essentially those who have limitless power -- are not allowed for now, though as the story progresses, we will see if this rule should be lifted.
  6. Because this is an X-Men roleplay, we feel that it is necessary to make it a rule that death is absolute.
  7. Canon characters are not permitted in this roleplay, as the story takes place close to one thousand years after their death.
  8. Leave it to the comanagers -- Oe98 and myself -- to request roleplayers to post more often.

The roleplay has officially commenced. (For real this time.) All characters under consideration have been completed and accepted, and anyone else who wishes to join may do so whenever they choose.

The way this roleplay is structured is such that characters can enter and join whenever they wish, provided their entry does not reinvent events that have already happened. As such, sign-ups will remain open indefinitely.

Hubs

The Hubs were where humanity made its final bid for survival. When the Hubs were first used, they were clean and well for the most part. However, nearly all of them today have fallen to decay, and their inhabitants have been forced to make a choice: die inside, or die outside.

Each Hub is numbered from zero through to the last one built, while the exact number lost to time. No two Hubs are exactly alike anymore.

Here's a nice analogy to think of when thinking of the Hubs:

Oe98 said:
The Hubs are set up to give supplies to other Hubs, but the people aren't really able to go to another Hub, such as me going from Chicago to St. Louis. It's more like me going from one yacht to another while both are in the middle of the ocean. It's possible, but difficult for most people.

We have made four Hubs to start off with, but if you wish to have your character come from a different Hub than those provided, just PM me or LongLiveLife and the three of us can look it over. LLL and I will make final changes to it so that it remains consistent with the RP. Here is the template you should use (know that we shall credit you as the maker of the Hub):

Name: (Please stick to the "Hub", followed by a number.)
Leader: (Right now, the leaders don't actually have names. Please see below for examples.)
Population: (Is it underpopulated, overpopulated, a small population for the Hub's size? Tell us!)
Male-to-Female Ratio: (I believe 1:2 is healthy; this is basically to give a feel for how scared the inhabitants are of dying out or needing to leave the Hub ["5:1" is when there's too many males... the Hub gets filled with "We're all going to die soon" and such...].)
Food Supply: ("dwindling" to "healthy" to "TOO MUCH")
Diseases: (It can not be "healthy"; it can be "A few" meaning there are some illnesses going around, but it should not be "Pandemic" either.)
Crowd Control: (Does the government have control over the people? How much?)
Government Type: ("Anarchy", "Democracy", "Communism" just... what type of government?)
Currency: (Barter system? Cash? HubCredits? What?)
Purpose to the Whole: (Each Hub originally had a purpose to the whole system of Hubs. Now though, times have changed. See below please.)
Religious Strength: (How powerful are the religious leaders? Especially in comparison to the governmental leaders.)
Cityscape: (Describe the inside of the Hub. Prose is appreciated. See below.)

For easy copy and paste:

Name:
Leader:

Male-to-Female Ratio:

We have some other Hubs set up too; please don't think that these are the only places :D.

Locations

There are plenty of locations in this RP. Not all of them are Hubs other than the ones in the Hubs section, but you should know not to use the Hubs in this section.

Foraminis Magneto A giant crater somewhere in the remains of America. It is polluted by residual radiation to the extent that no life can survive any amount of time within it. It is the deepest crater in the world; its depths a mystery due to the green fog that hangs thick in the air.

Caput Mundi Largest building in the world (after the war), it houses the Owner in Hub 0. It triples as the world's most protected and secretive building, and is perhaps the most important building in the Hub system as Hub leaders have annual congregations here.

Hub Tunnels Intertwining subterranean tunnels that connect the Hubs. Plenty of them are sealed off to protect the rest of the Hub system, and many are infested with ravenous creatures, making travel through them dangerous.

Lake Mlaa Also known as "The Black Lake" for the color of the water: black. This lake is now polluted by an unknown substance and is now tar black; what lies beneath remains completely unknown. At the edge of the lake lies a facility presumably designed to analyze the lake.

More to come as the RP moves forward.

GENERAL PROFILE
Name: Julian DeGrey
Alias: Entropy
Species/Ethnicity: Mutant/Caucasian
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Alignment: None
-- Just the voices in his head.

PHYSICAL PROFILE AND BACKGROUND
Physical Appearance: Julian has short cut brown hair that is always messy. There are white streaks that run through it -- a sign of stress. He has dark blue eyes and a goatee. He stands about 5'10 and weighs around 180lbs, giving him a fit build. He wears a pair of old black sneakers, old blue jeans with holes in them, a white t-shirt with a black button-up over it, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He also wears a pair of fingerless leather gloves, and he has several tattoos. His skin is slightly darker, due to time outside the Hub.
Hub: XII
History: Julian DeGrey was born to one of the last medically-gifted people in Hub XII. Sadly, she died at his birth. He never knew a father, but was instead raised on the streets, as with most in Hub XII. He learned at a young age to fend for himself from an older boy who wasn't quite there in the head himself. This older boy had at one point claimed he was special, and that so was Julian... but he never learned anymore than that, because by the time he was 8, the older boy was killed in a small gang fight on the west side of the Hub. Julian was taken "prisoner" by the gang and forced to steal, lie, and do other things for them. He was treated worst than dirt, and was often put outside the Hub for punishment (commonly for things he did not do).
At the age of 14, Julian's powers were unlocked during a raid on a rival gang's safehouse. He was used as a distraction by his captors, who knew very well that he would probably die. Julian was ambushed and surrounded by six opponents with guns. As they were about to fire, Julian fell to his knees screaming -- the years of stress had finally popped in his head, and awoke his abilities violently. The men around him ended up shooting themselves out of the confusion and chaos, trying to make the voices stop in their heads. Julian, in a state of shock and panic, ran away, leaving a trail of dead in his wake from the massive psychic turmoil. Over the next few years, he finally learned to bring his powers under his control, though he will probably never have a full mastery of them.
From then until now, Julian has lived his life day-to-day, only thinking about current survival. He taught himself Capoeira when he was 18. He has not done well at keeping his powers hidden or himself out of the spot-light: in fact, most places you go in XII, people jump at the sound of his name. While he's not directly for or against anybody, his unpredictability and instability have made him the subject of quite of attention. However, no one has been able to accurately predict if he is a mutant or not, because of the state of anarchy that XII is constantly in.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
Personality: There's more than one reason as to why he's called Entropy. His mind is purely chaotic. There is no order in his brain, no reasoning as people would normally go. While he's not a lunatic (running around, screaming, frothing at the mouth) he's never completely sane either -- he's always tapping his foot, or his eye is twitching, something to that effect. One moment, he could shake your hand and offer to take you to dinner, the next, trying to cut off said hand. He was tortured as a child, and between that and his powers, there may never be a moment of clarity for him again. He can cope in social situations and can come off as a little odd, but manageable. He also constantly changes his mind, and second guesses himself, which has been dangerous for him in battle in the past.

COMBAT/ABILITIES (For Mutant Characters)
Powers: Disruption
Weapon: Whatever he can get a hold of, though he usually carries around a stave of some kind.
Fighting Style: Brawler, with some Capoeira he taught himself from a book he found.
Skills/Talents: Because he can never quite maintain focus, he has learned to improvise. He's also really good at lockpicking and other devious deeds.
Strengths/Abilities:
Julian's ability allows him to disrupt the emotions and thoughts of those around him, disrupt the order of space (which allows him to blink small distances, the farthest so far has been 1,500 Yards, and he has to see where he is going), and disrupt the energy around him, creating small but powerful explosions that have a range limit (200 yards, assuming he can see). He can disrupt other abilities on occasion... but this is an ability that rarely pops up, only in the most urgent of need. He's almost completely unreadable telepathically, because a mind reader would just hear random voices and confusion.
Weaknesses/Limitations: He cannot focus, his mind is in constant chaos, and on occasion he does lose control of his abilities. He's also very open to psychic detection because of the constant chaos he emits psionically -- in other words, if you were trying to find a heartbeat with a stethoscope, if you passed over him, you'd hear a blaring scream.

MISCELLANEOUS - This part is optional.
Best Traits: Spontaneous?
Quirks/Mannerisms: He's constantly moving or twitching some part of his body. He also talks to himself quite a bit.
Darkest Secret: He actually has a goal.
Likes: Peaches (when he can find them), women (because they calm him down some), hard rock music
Dislikes: Classical music, gangs, drugs

I am liking the char temps so far :D.

However, the Hub temp should not have been placed in with your character template. If LLL or I were PMed it, we would have edited some things to make it work with the RP, which is for the benefit of everyone involved, really.

We will change it to make it work with what we already have, but we'd have prefered being PMed about it first, so we could have gone over the changes together. We will try keep important factors to your character in, but we won't discuss the changes with you.

Thank you all for your interest in this roleplay.

Just so you all are aware of proceedings, sign ups will be kept open for at least a week to ensure we receive as many character templates as possible. In the mean while, your patience during this time is greatly appreciated.

I've got a template in the works. Is 900 words for the Psychological Profile an overkill?

xD Just organize it with proper paragraphs and such. As long as it has a bunch of detail, chances are it's okay. But if it's a huge wall of text, as it most likely will be, just use size tags and make the text small or something :D. Thank you for asking!

haha, I don't doubt that for one bit. I have slight experience of over-explaining things; especially appearances(sometimes). But with more on-topic words, I'll be claiming weather control for my character, and a temp will be up over the weekend.

D: May have issues with it! You may wish to choose something specific? I know the one to PM here is LLL. I hope you get this in time before you spend a bunch of time on it. I need to post my temp soon xD *has been nocturnal for the past few days*.

Well, it's not going to be complete weather control, but a limited moderation. Let's just say it won't be causing full-scale disasters, but just minor casualties :3.

I know the one to PM here is LLL.

Oh-ee, you just know me too well.

In other news, the character templates that have been submitted thus far are of very high quality and I like what I have seen, save for a few exceptions that are currently being edited; you all know who you are. However, there seems to be a tremendous gender imbalance with the characters!

Female roleplayers, or male roleplayers who are interested in playing female characters, please accept my personal invitation for you to join this roleplay.

A big thank you again to all who have signed up.

We thought we'd make an announcement of the Hubs.

To clarify with the Hub traveling:

The Hubs are set up to give supplies to other Hubs, but the people aren't really able to go to another Hub, such as me going from Chicago to St. Louis. It's more like me going from one yacht to another while both are in the middle of the ocean. It's possible, but difficult for most people.

This has been added to my first post, and I separated my first post into sections for the RP later on.

Thank you all for your character template submissions; they were a pleasure to read for Oe98 and myself.

I have updated my original post to include a character roster of those accepted, under consideration and to be uploaded. Congratulations to all those who made it in, and my sincerest apologies to those who did not.
