Yes, the cards are used for fighting. You can see Sora use a "Cloud card" to summon Cloud in battle in some gameplay footage. The 'heart's of your friends' deal probably has to do with Sora trying to remember his friends, and how the heart supposedly ties them together forever.

Y'know in the last game, the Fairy Godmother told you that a summon was a person (animal, actually) with a very strong heart. So strong, that when their world was destroyed, they remained as a gem...So the cards are the hearts of your friends....Maybe you can summon friends (like Kairi, Leon, Yuffie) into battle?....I kinda doubt this. Just a thought...
Heh, imagine Kairi fighting! That'd be cool!

I am sooooooooooooo glad this was from last year cuz if it were now I'd be like:You people have no clue what so ever about COM huh?

But just for fun I'll explain,There are 7 different types of cards,Here are the ones for the battle feild:attack cards:attaking ofcourse,magic cards:to use fire,blizzard,thunder,cure,to summon etc.,Item cards:Potion,hi-potion,mega-potion,ethermega-ether etc.,friend cards:to help you fight(for Alladin,Jack,Ariel,PeterPan,etc.,it depends on which floor you are on,i'll explain later),Donald Duck,Goofyand so on,enemy cards:an ability your enemy has,by pressing select,and you might want to equipt them,premium cards:envolved versions of normal cards.premium cards require very little CP(card power),but can only be used once per battle-no reloads allowed.Only attack cards & magic cards can be upgraded to premium cards.You can forfeit a premium bonus by pressing the B button.You can get these if heartless(rarley)drop them.

And playfeild cards are:world cards:these are cards of the worlds based on Sora's memories of that world,on the 2nd floor you choose one card out of the few choices,you use one and it is the 2nd level(or the 2nd floor),after beating that floor you move onto the 3rd and choose another world that you haven't used.And it goes on like that until you get some more cards,and until you have reached the twelveth floor.Map cards:these cards are what you need to open a door the different types are:Tranquil darkness,Teeming darkness,Almighty darkness,sleeping darkness,looming darkness,Premium room,white room,black room,martial waking,sorcerous waking,alchemic waking,meeting ground,stagnant space,strong initiative,lasting daze,calm bounty,guarded trove,false bounty,moment's reprieve,mingling worlds,moogle room
And the important ones:
Key of beginnings,key of guidance,key to truth,

ones to give you rewards:key to rewards

okee dokee that took me for ever!!!!Oh well....
