So, those of you who frequent the forums might have seen my (joke) "analysis" of the leaked Kingdom Hearts -HD 1.5 ReMIX- trailer and the official E3 Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy trailer. These generated discussion and laughs amongst the members as we waited for E3 to start (And what a start!)
In hype for the Kingdom Hearts III announcement and trailer, Master Spockanort asked me to do the same, only this time for it to be on the main site. "Um, who would want to read that? It was just a concept trailer" I asked myself, and here I am... still asking myself that.
But anyways, I am here to do my job so prepare for my insane understanding of this concept trailer.
We start off the trailer with key scenes from previous Kingdom Hearts games playing. The closing dialogue to the Birth by Sleep ending plays over the top of the video. This all leads to the Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] opening. All of this is obviously showing that these games are all directly linked to Kingdom Hearts III, and that it is a good opportunity to play the High Definition Remasters.
The Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] opening directly lead into the trailer. Here we see Sora floating down from the sky. He is wearing his original Kingdom Hearts attire, symbolising where he started out from, how far he has come in this journey, the bonds he has made with his friends.
Master Eraqus' keyblade. The last time we saw this, it was in the possession of Aqua. At the end of Birth by Sleep, Aqua found herself in the Realm of Darkness with only her wayfinder, this keyblade, and the strength of her friends to keep her going. So why is it here? And more importantly...
Why does Sora have it? Is this symbolic of the journey that Sora is about to undertake? Is it foreshadowing his saving of Aqua? Is this a hint that Sora has gotten his Master status, and that he has more abilities in order to help take down Master Xehanort?
Click on the image to make see it larger. Here we get our first glimpse at the HUD on the gameplay menu. To the left is the normal "Attack"; "Magic"; and "Items" and to the right is Sora's health, his magic, and allies. It is very similar to Kingdom Hearts II. After the reception of the command deck, it seems odd that they would revert back to this. However, there might be more too it...
Here we get our first glimpse of the enemies in Kingdom Hearts III. Lo and behold, it's the Heartless! But... my, this is different to how we've seen them in the past! Is this foreshadowing the greatest threat Sora will face? Is this large crowd of heartless representing the amount of evil going after Sora?
Here we see them give chase to Sora. The camera pans along with him and fixes itself, always showing the protagonist and the action. It feels very scripted, so don't expect anything like this to remain in the final version of the game.
Flowmotion, first showcased in Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] appears to make a return here. Sora jumps up and off the building, just like both he and Riku were able to do in the Realm of Sleep. Is Sora in reality or a dream here? Is he still fighting for the title of Master, and both Donald and Goofy are helping him out? (One of my theories is that Donald and Goofy go into the Realm of Sleep looking for Sora so this compliments that).
Here we see Sora jump and land on the Heartless and then proceed to RIDE the mob. Is this a new ability that Sora has learnt? How does he not fall through the Heartless gaps? It will be certainly interesting to see if this lasts throughout the rest of the development.
If the Heartless needed any more clarrification that they are a stronger force than they were in Kingdom Hearts II, it's this swirling cyclone of them. Where did they go to get this power? Why weren't they able to do that before? Is someone manipulating the Heartless and giving them new abilities? Also, let me drag your attention back to the gameplay HUD. Notice the little arrow next to "Attack"? Are they having the same system as Kingdom Hearts II where you can swap party members on the fly? Or are you able to access more than that?
Also, notice the yellow/orange bar. In Kingdom Hearts II, that was used for the Drive Forms. Now it has been replaced by "EX". What does EX mean and what could it do? Also notice the space next to Donald and Goofy? Could there be more interaction between Sora and them on the main field?
And the trailer closes on Sora launching an attack on the Heartless. Fans of Kingdom Hearts should be thrilled that the team put this video together for them. It sucessfully highlighted what the game will look like on the PS4 console, as well as foreshadowing a lot of Kingdom Hearts III.
